Perennial herbaceous plant, that grows in rural environments and abandoned fields preferring sunny and dry locations. The leaves and petals are characterized by small translucent glands, similar to small holes containing hypericina. From this peculiarity comes its Latin name, "perforatum", and the common one, "millebuchi”. Its maximum flowering occurs around June 2, the day of Saint John from which another name is commonly used: Saint John’s Wort.

The name Hypericum comes from the Greek "hyper" (above) and "eikon" (image) which means "above the image" since in ancient times there was the custom of hanging the plant over the icons and sacred representations. According to popular tradition its flowers collected on the night of June 24, Saint John’s Day, would have magical properties against spells and evil spirits.
